RSS feeds are present on most blogs these days but are often overlooked elsewhere. Using the simple steps below, you'll be able to use your RSS feeds not only to enhance the user experience, but also to feed your SEO efforts with new (and powerful) search engine attractiveness.
Add logo and images to your feed, use your name in the title - think branding
Offer an HTML version of your feed
Title alphabetically - most feed readers display feeds alphabetically! - and remember that your title should be your most keyword-rich item
Use full path for links and create unique URLs to reach them, but do not put tracking codes into the URLs
Focus your feed with a keyword theme - think targeted keywords and write the feed meta the way you would do it for your important pages
Use full text, not summaries
Include 20 items or more (not 10!)
Always claim your blog and subscribe to your own RSS feed - at least on Technorati
And some more advice:
Use multiple feeds (for example, by category, by latest comments, etc.)
Work on creating a truly compelling site description for yourself
You can RSS to add relevant third-party content [headlines and summaries only!] to your website to gain additional search engine feromones to your keywords
Remember, an RSS feed that contains enclosures (i.e. podcasts) can get into additional RSS directories & engines
Lastly, submit your RSS feeds to all the RSS search engines and directories!
And if you can add to this list, please visit my Search Marketing Blog and leave a comment.
